In
1969 a generous man named Sam Shapero, who was the Town
of Tiburon's treasurer, decided that Blackie's Pasture and the area
around it needed to be preserved and protected. He did two things: he
went out and bought one-third of the land, then gave it to a foundation
he created, the Tiburon Peninsula Foundation. The Foundation then raised
the money needed to buy another third of the land, gifting its
two-thirds to the Town of Tiburon on the condition that they wrestle the
remaining third from Caltrans. Tiburon managed to do just that and, from
this start, came Blackie's
Pasture, McKegney Green, and South of the Knoll Park.
The
Foundation and its board, which is comprised of concerned citizens,
has continued to work on behalf of the community. As the Tiburon
Peninsula grows, now more than ever we need an organization that will
help us preserve, protect, and enhance all of the good things about life
on the Tiburon Peninsula.
The
goals of the Foundation are still those that Sam Shapero instilled
at the beginning: to protect what is good about life on the peninsula in
order to remind us of our past and to work cooperatively with other
groups to enhance our mutual efforts to improve and preserve the
peninsula environment, making it a focus for those of us who love
Belvedere and Tiburon.

The Tiburon Peninsula Foundation exists to promote, facilitate, and enhance the quality of life and
sense of community on the Tiburon Peninsula; to initiate and support an
approach to community that stimulates volunteerism, transcends our
normal boundaries, brings people together for the common good, and
connects us to our past. |
